| Rameshwaram-the island
city of Tamil Nadu is called Varanasi of South. A pilgrimage to Kashi
is not considered complete without a pilgrimage to Rameshwaram. Rameshwaram
pilgrim site has its own significance in Hindu religion. It is the place,
which has one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of India.
The island of Rameshwaram is in the shape of conch and the main temple
of Rameshwaram- the Ramanatha Swamy Temple occupies most of the area.
Rameshwaram has numerous other temples also and that is why it is one
of the most visited pilgrim site in India.
Ramanatha Swamy Temple
Built in 17 th century and located near to sea on the eastern side
of the island, this temple has one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of India.
Other attractive features of the temple includes its 1200 gigantic granite
columns, 54 meter tall gate towers, 1220 meters magnificent corridors
and 22 sacred wells that tastes different from each other.
Agnitheertham
Located 100 meters away from the Ramanatha Swamy Temple it is the sacred
place where Rama worshipped Lord Shiva to absolve himself for killing
their devotee Ravana.
Ramjharokha Temple
This holy shrine is located at the highest point of island called Gandamadana
Parvatham
and is 2 km from Rameshwaram. The imprint of Lord Rama's feet is placed
here on a chakra.
Dhanushkodi
Located in the eastern corner of the island and 8 km from Rameshwaram,
Dhanushkodi derives its name from Rama's bow or dhanush.
Kothandaramaswamy Temple
This spot has its own historical significance. It is believed that
it is the place where Ravana's brother Vibhisana submitted himself to
Rama and regret for his brother's act.
