Bharata Natyam
This is the oldest and most popular dance form, which originated in

Karagaattam
This folk dance in Tamil Nadu is performed in the honor of the rain
goddess. The dance has two forms Aatta Karagam and Sakti Karagam performed
with a fire pot on the head.
Kaavadi Aatam
The ancient Tamil's on their pilgrimage carried the offering for god
at the end of a long stick, which then was balanced on the shoulders.
During their journey they danced and sang to their god. So special folk
songs were composed while carrying the Kavadi.
Poikkal Kudirai Aattam ( Dummy Horse Dance)
Here the dancer bears the dummy figure of a horse on the hips. The
dancer dons wooden legs, which sounds, like the horse and keeps a sword
or a whip.
Therukoothu
Celebrated during the months of Panguni and Aadi. A wooden bench where
the singers and dancers sit and only the men take part in this and they
enact the female roles. The performance consists of story telling, dialogues,
songs and dance.
Oyilaattam
Oyil signifies beauty hence the dance of beauty. Men perform this but
some years back even the women started to participate. Initially the
dancer will stand in a row dancing in rhythmical steps with the accompaniment
of music. Gradually the row increases with the new comers and guests.
The dancers also wear ankle- bells.
Silambaatam
It is the fighting with swords so as to overcome the enemy and teach
him a lesson. Here the violent fight is seen in the form of non- violent
folk dance. This has been there since the time of Tamil Kings.
Snake Dance
This folk dance of Tamil Nadu is in the honor of the snake god which
safe guards the health and happiness of the rural folk. Here the young
girls are dressed in a tight costume designed like snakeskin. The dancer
makes movements in the form of a snake, writhing and creeping and at
times making quick movements with heads and hands.
