Overview

Visit to Kanyakumari Beach in India, Once referred to as the Alexandria of the East, Kanyakumari was the centre for art, culture, civilization and pilgrimage. It was also a famous trading route which resulted in the arrival of two major religions Islam and Christianity.

Beaches in Kanyakumari was also ruled by the Cholas, the Cheras and later by Pandayas and the Nayakas. During the British rule, it was known as Cape Camorin, and was a part of Kerala state. But with the reorganisation of states, all Tamil speaking areas were seceded and the district was formed in 1956.

The Beaches in Kanyakumari is a beautiful sight with multi-coloured sand, but it does not really offer one the opportunity to sunbathe on soft golden sands, or to frolic in the waves either. The seashore is rocky and dangerous, and there is a manmade wall running along it.

People are warned to stay off the rocks, and when if someone ventures out of bounds, he or she is quickly and severely reprimanded by a watchful policeman. There is a lighthouse from where one can get a panoramic view.

Major Attractions of Kanyakumari Beach

  • The Sangam
     Sangam is the meeting point of the three major bodies of water, the Bay of Bengal, the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean.

  • It is a bathing ghat, with steps leading into the water and a sort of lagoon formed between land by a series of rocks. People bathe and jump around, getting lightly battered by the remains of waves, which are washing over the rocks.

  • Vivekananda's Rock
    Kanyakumari is famous for Vivekananda's rock, a huge stone rising out of the sea, on which Swami Vivekananda is said to have meditated. It now houses the statue of Vivekananda and is a memorial to him.

  • Not surprisingly, Kanyakumari is a popular destination for Vivekananda's followers, so there are many Bengalis here, and some Bengali hotels and restaurants are available too.

A Visual Feast
Kanyakumari beach has a breathtaking sight with multi-colored sand lapped by the outreaching ocean waves.

You may not find the golden sand to laze around while you sunbathe, but the beauty of colorful sands all over has their own aesthetic appeal. The seashore is rough and rocky with manmade embankment that adds to the beauty of the beach.

A lighthouse stands high on the shore from where one can have a splurge of panoramic view of the area.

The merging three oceans make the seawater rough enough with the hurtling waves breaking on the shore make the sight worth cherishing.

You can buy a host of colorful shells on the Kanyakumari beach for a wonderful keepsake.

Vivekananda's Rock
Kanyakumari Beach is home to the world famous Vivekananda's rock, a huge stone jutting out of the sea, which is said to be the place where Swami Vivekananda meditated.

The rock has the statue of Vivekananda and is a memorial to him. A popular visit for the followers of Vivekanand and people of Bengal, there are quite a Bengali hotels and restaurants

The Sangam
Sangam is the confluence of the Bay of Bengal, the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean.

There is a kind of lagoon here formed by a series of rocks, which is also being used a bathing ghat by people.

You can enjoy the warm and soothing waves breaking onto your body and get rejuvenated under the bright sun and blue sky.

MUTTAM

This is located 40 km away (North west) of Kanyakumari. There is a five beach in this place. There is a lighthouse in this shore and it is a place perfect for relaxation.

SANGUTHURAI BEACH

Holiday Beach in Kanyakumari, Sanguthurai, a beautiful beach resort is 10 km away from Nagercoil. It is a convenient spot for the local people. There are no infra structure facilities till now, but the district administration has sanctioned Rs.6 lakhs to build parks and entertainment buildings. The work of construction is complete. There are also plans to put up few shops for women self Help Groups, wherein tourists can buy the necessary things they want.

SHOTHARILAI BEACH - Holiday Beach in Kanyakumari

This is one of the beautiful natural beaches located in the district which is 10 km away from Kanyakumari. The water in this beach is shallow and we can find many sand dunes in the shores. The district administration has taken steps and developed this wonderful natural beach into a five tourist spot. The new laid coastal road leads the tourists to this spot. The beautiful site that the tourists watch along the way to this spot enthralls them with joy.
