The temple city of Central India, Khajuraho is famous throughout the
world for its delicately carved temples. Tourist attractions of Khajuraho
mainly are the temples known for their art form.
Situated in southeast of Delhi at distance of 595 km (370 miles), Khajuraho
is a small village in present times. But in ancient times, it was a
large city ruled by Chandelas. Thousands of visitors and travelers throng
this place every year to view the rich Indian art and culture.
UNESCO declares most of the tourist attractions in Khajuraho as World
Heritage sites. Out of the 85 original temple works only 22 has survived
the time.
Tourist Attractions in Khajuraho
Temples of Khajuraho are mainly divided into three groups.
Eastern Group Temples
Adinath Temple: This temple is dedicated to the Jain saint Adinath.
This temple is decorated by the sculpted figures, including those of
yakshis.
Parsvanth Temple: The largest temple of Jain group and the most noteworthy
one also. Sculptures on the outer walls increase the artistic value
of the temple.
Hanuman Temple: The oldest structure discovered in Khajuraho so far-8ft
high statue of “the Monkey God” make this temple noteworthy.
Brahma Temple: located near the village on the banks of Khajur Sagar,
this Brahma temple is simple in design. But the attractions of this
temple are the whole temple body made of granite while the shikara made
of sandstone.
Southern Group Temples
Dulah Deo Temple: The finest of Khajuraho temple, this temple is also
called as Kunwar Math. The main features of temple are the ardhmanadap,
the manadapa, the maha manadap, the antarala and the garbha griha. Originally
temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva.
Chattarbhuj Temple: Located three kilometers south of Khajuraho, two
temples are in ruin conditions at present. One of them is dedicated
to Lord Shiva having a marble lingam while the other one is dedicated
to Lord Vishnu with an image of 3.3m high as of Chatturbhuja
Western Group Temples
Chitragupta Temple: This temple belongs to Lord Brahma. Highlight of
the temple are a three-headed Brahma image, lions at the northern side
and elephants in the southern direction.
Kandariya Mahadeo: This Shiva temple is the largest and the most typical
of Khajuraho temple. 31m high, this temple's main noteworthy features
are the entrance arch, the ceilings and the pillars of the interior
compartments.
Chaunsat Yogini: The only granite temple among Khajuraho temples, dedicated
to Goddess Kali.
Lakshamana Temple: This beautiful Vishnu temple contains a lintel over
the entrance that shows trinity of Brahma, Shiva and Vishnu along with
Lakshmi.
State Museum of Tribal and Folk Arts
Madhya Pradesh's fine collection of tribal work and folk art pieces
are on display at the Chandela Cultural Complex. Museum is open all
days except Monday and government holidays from noon to 8 pm.
