Nestled along the Western
Ghats, the Periyar National Park was established in 1895 with the construction
of a dam.

in 1934 and came under Tiger Project in 1978.
It became the national

If the viewer is very lucky, he can view a Python or a King Cobra. The flying lizard and flying snake are the rare species found here.
The Periyar Lake has grey heron, ibis, Malabar Hornbill and grey hornbill.
The other birds are kingfishers, ospreys, kites and orioles, hill mynas, racket tailed Drongos, parakeets and flycatchers.
Kumily, which is only 4 kms away, is famous as a spice trade center. There is also a ruined Mangala Devi temple amidst the Thekkady forest.
