| Nagarhole National
Park in Karnataka covers around 643 kms in area. The National Park is
home to tiger and other wildlife species and 250 bird species. This
national park is home to several endangered species. Nagarhole Wildlife
Park derives it meaning from Kannada language, the word "Naga"
means snake and "Hole" means streams. Thus it refers to the
numerous streams that are in the tropical forest.
The Nagarhole is in Karnataka and is between Kabini River and the Bandipur
National Park.
The animals that are common in the Nagarhole wildlife Sanctuary are
the tiger, leopard, panther, sloth bear, gaur, elephant, sambhar, chital
and other mammals like muntjac, the tiny mouse bear, giant squirrel,
slender loris, Langurs, wild boar, pangolin and macaques.
The other attractions include babbler, bee eater, bulbul, hornbill,
alexandrine, woodpecker, great Indian reed, eagle, golden- back parakeet,
dove amongst the large variety of birds to be found here.
The tourists have to travel in jeeps or vans operated by the forest
department, as no local transport is available here. In the Nagarhole
Tiger reserve the summer does not exceed 33 C (March and May) and in
the winter it is around 14 C (November to January). The monsoon season
is from June to September.
The forest department has two rest houses and reservation has to be
made well in advance. The Nagarhole is well connected to the adjoining
areas of the Karnataka. The park is linked with the towns of Madikere
(90 km) and Mysore (96 km) from where one can either use state transport
buses or taxis. The nearest rail station is Mysore and the international
airport is Bangalore (220 km).
The Nagarhole in Karnataka is considered to be the best wildlife park
